Series 2: Topical Files, 1892-1989

The Topical Files series is predominantly composed of copies of articles and books written about the Dulles Family, especially Dulles's brother John Foster, as well as related correspondence seeking her approval for publication. The series also includes reports related to Dulles's work with the State Department, especially concerning her work in Berlin, Hungary, and Eastern Europe.

The Writings series includes drafts and published copies of articles and books written by Dulles and related correspondence with readers. The majority of her writings concern the career of her brother, John Foster Dulles. Other topics include a fictional story on visiting a brain, Harvard during the twenties, and life as an ambassador. Also included are transcripts of two interviews conducted with Dulles about her life and career with the State Department and reference materials she collected in preparation for writing, the majority of which are newspaper clippings about John Foster Dulles.

The Capital Punishment Project subseries documents the ACLU's opposition to the death penalty and includes files on state legislation, clemency policies, and subject files on the wide range of issues involved, such as research and statistics on the application of the death penalty, death penalty cases, organizations with similar goals, the court system, and capital punishment internationally. The records also document the administration of the project, including the files of director Henry Schwarzschild, files from affiliate involvement with the project, project publicity, correspondence, and publications.

Subseries 2J: Sexual Privacy Project, 1878-1978

The Sexual Privacy Project subseries is largely composed of case files and subject files about the project's work on behalf of the LBGT community, prostitutes, and the general right to sexual privacy. Major issues addressed in the cases include anti-sodomy laws, child custody, discrimination, employment discrimination, military rights, police harassment, and security clearance. The subject files consist of materials on cases and legislation that the ACLU was monitoring and research materials on a wide variety of sexual privacy issues. The subseries also includes materials for a book on gay rights, correspondence from homosexuals in prison about their treatment, files on legalizing prostitution, and files on sexual privacy legislation and challenges in each state.

The Voters' Rights Project subseries contains case files, correspondence, and the files of director Charles Morgan. The primary cases are Hadnott v. Amos , a class action suit brought by the National Democratic Party of Alabama (NDPA) against Alabama state officials for refusing to include NDPA candidates on ballots in the 1968 general election, and Johnson v. Miller regarding Georgia's congressional districts. The correspondence includes letters from prisoners with general appeals for ACLU help on due process violations and project correspondence with the Southern Regional Office and with affiliates. Also included are files on organizations involved in related advocacy work, publications, speeches, and newspaper clippings.

Series 2: Project Files, 1877-2000

The Project Files series contains the records of twelve of the ACLU's projects, which each addressed an area of civil liberties violations. Project records typically consist of case files, research files, and project publicity and correspondence. The best documented projects are the Children's Rights Project and Women's Rights Project, and to a lesser extent the Arts Censorship Project, Capital Punishment Project, and Reproductive Freedom Project. Please see the subseries descriptions for additional information about the contents of each subseries.

Subseries 7C: Biographical Materials, includes biographies, press releases, correspondence, official documents, and narrative biographies written by individuals close to Stevenson. The general biographical materials include official biographies prepared for Stevenson's political campaigns, speech introductions, and entries into Who's Who and other biographical anthologies. The correspondence primarily includes requests from students writing reports on Stevenson. A small amount of genealogical information, family reminiscences, and newspaper articles on Stevenson's accidental shooting of Ruth Merwin in 1913 are also included.
