Collection Overview
Collection Description & Creator Information
- Scope and Contents
Subseries 18B: Assistant to the President Files, General, 1968-1981, was compiled by two assistants to the president. Robert K. Durkee '69 was appointed to this position in 1972, and was replaced by T. Dennis Sullivan '70, who replaced him in 1977. Mudd Library has no records maintained personally by any of the assistants to Bowen following Sullivan, who moved to another position in 1980. The assistants to the president were responsible for speech-writing, undertaking some of the president's correspondence, and acting as contacts in the president's office for campus offices and organizations. Most of the files in this subseries contain background information and sample letters used to prepare correspondence for their own signature or the president's. As a result, this subseries is an excellent resource for background material on campus issues such as coeducation, cohabitation, student unrest, strikes, and South Africa investments. Arrangements made and speeches written for the president for use on special occasions, such as reunions and Alumni Days; congressional testimony; and reports to the Trustees are included in these files as well. Of special note are transcripts of oral history interviews with former president Harold Dodds GS'14 and longtime trustee Harold Helm '20.
