Subseries 16E: Organizations and Clubs, 1924-1972
Collection Description & Creator Information
- Scope and Contents
Subseries 16E: Organizations and Clubs, 1924-1972 (bulk 1957-1972) contains correspondence and documents regarding student organizations and clubs, arranged alphabetically by name. Of note are the files on the American Whig-Cliosophic Society, the files on the Woodrow Wilson College or Society, which had its start during Goheen's presidency, and the many files concerning the eating clubs on campus, which can be found under their respective names. Of special interest are the files concerning the Princeton bicker, a system which came under attack for supposed discrimination in 1958, causing a major public relations debacle in Goheen's first year as President. Goheen kept a working file on the eating clubs and their history, going back to 1924. The series includes a report on the club system and the 1958 bicker by Steven Rockefeller (1960).
For more information on student organizations and clubs researchers are referred to the Eating Clubs collection (AC#019), the William K. Selden Collection on Eating Clubs (AC#30), and particular collections found in the University Archives under individual club names.
