Subseries 17H: Princeton University Conference, 1957-1972 pertains to a program, begun in October 1956, to exchange ideas among faculty members and outside academics, and members from the worlds of industry, business and finance, labor unions, and government. The objective was to "stimulate communication between the inter-dependent elements of society." The series consists of general files and subject files. The former document the development of the program and contain correspondence, memoranda, evaluations, and reports. The subject files concern individual conferences and meetings, filed alphabetically by title, and cover topics of national or international interest or concern, including foreign politics, ecological issues, and technology. Of specific interest are the files on the so called "Hickel Incident" under 'Ecological Crisis.' Secretary of the Interior Walter Hickel visited the campus on March 5, 1970 for a speech on the matter, and was heckled by protesting students. The files include outside correspondence from concerned alumni and others resulting from the publicity about the incident and the punishment of the students involved.
