Subseries 3A: Rees and Rudenstine--Academic Deans, 1973, 1987-1988, includes documents related to the formal and informal meetings of high-ranking University officers that oversee the academic functions of the University. These positions included the provost, the dean of the college, the dean of the faculty, the dean of the graduate school, and (in the later years) the chair of the University Research Board. Topics discussed include the staffing and funding of academic departments and programs, the curriculum, grading, and faculty recruitment and promotion.

Subseries 3B: Rees and Rudenstine--Academic Departments and Programs, 1967-1988, consists of files on academic departments, programs, and schools. Files contain documents related to departmental (or program, school, etc.) staffing, fund raising, budgeting, curriculum, faculty recruiting, the tenure process, future planning, personnel issues, and department chairs.

Subseries 3C: Rees and Rudenstine--Administrative Affairs, 1970-1987, contains records relating to the work of the vice president for administrative affairs, such as general personnel information (individual personnel files are not included), benefits, administrative services, and health services.

Subseries 3D: Rees and Rudenstine--Affirmative Action, 1968-1986, is comprised of records documenting the Affirmative Action programs at the University. Final oversight of these programs rested directly with the provost, and for the entire period covered by these records, an assistant or associate provost's time was dedicated to these issues. Files include information on early affirmative action policies and programs for women, racial minorities, and those with disabilities; and include discussion of University policies, governmental involvement, and controversial cases. These records include material related to both students and staff members.

Subseries 3E: Rees and Rudenstine--Alumni Affairs, 1969-1987, contains records documenting provosts' interactions with Princeton alumni. Materials include correspondence with various alumni, fundraising letters and briefs, talks to alumni groups, and documents related to the Princeton Alumni Weekly, Rudenstine's relations with his class of 1956, and conservative alumni groups Alumni Committee to Involve Ourselves Now (ACTION) and Concerned Alumni of Princeton (CAP).

Subseries 3F: Rees and Rudenstine--Board of Trustees, 1969-1987, consists of records related to the Board of Trustees, including materials submitted by the Princeton administration for consideration at trustee meetings and correspondence with trustees. Files relating to trustee committees are substantially incomplete.

Subseries 3G: Rees and Rudenstine--Chapel, 1969-1987, contains records on the Chapel building, the use of the Chapel, Chapel services, the dean of the chapel, the Friends of the Chapel, student religious groups, and the role of religion on campus.

Subseries 3H: Rees and Rudenstine--Council of the Princeton University Community (CPUC), 1969-1984, consists of materials related to the Council, including proposals, committee reports, minutes, agenda, and membership and committee membership lists. Some documents record discussions of controversial issues, such as the role of the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) on campus and University investments in companies doing business in South Africa. The Council consists of student, staff, and faculty representatives, as well as members of the administration. Material related to the Priorities Committee (of the CPUC) from this time period may be found in subseries 3R.

Subseries 3I: Rees and Rudenstine--Dean of the College, 1959-1988, contains documents related to the Office of the Dean of the College and programs under its oversight, including admission, financial aid, the registrar, advising programs, special education, and counseling. More detailed information on most of the issues contained in this subseries can be found in the Office of the Dean of the College Records (AC149).

Subseries 3J: Rees and Rudenstine--External or Affiliated Groups, 1967-1986, contains files relating to outside organizations, companies, associations, universities, and countries. Some of these groups, such as the Blairstown Educational Center and the Princeton University Press, are affiliated with Princeton University.

Subseries 3K: Rees and Rudenstine--Facilities and Planning, 1967-1987, contains records relating to the facilities and physical space of the University and also including subjects such as the use of energy and space. Files on real estate holdings of the University, such as Palmer Square and the Forrestal Center can be found here, as can materials on food services and physical planning.

Subseries 3L: Rees and Rudenstine--Faculty, 1965-1988, contains records relating to the work of the dean of the faculty and the faculty in general. Files include subjects such as benefits, salaries, faculty meetings and committees, staffing, and endowed chairs. More detailed information on all of the issues contained in this subseries can be found in the Office of the Dean of the Faculty Records (AC118).

Subseries 3M: Rees and Rudenstine--Financial Vice President, 1967-1989, consists of documents related to the finances and financial policies of the University, as well as the fiscal vice president. The most extensive documentation relates to the records of the controller, the Princeton Investment Company (PRINCO), development files on donor foundations, corporations, and individuals, and development records on the mid-1980s Campaign for Princeton. This subseries also contains some documentation about the controversy over whether the University should divest from companies doing business in South Africa. Records of the Priorities Committee are held in subseries 3R.

Subseries 3N: Rees and Rudenstine--General Counsel, 1973-1987, contains records pertaining to legal issues faced by the University. The files contain legislation summaries, legal briefs, settlement proposals, and memoranda explaining how University officials, faculty, or staff should conform to the details of specific laws. Documents from high profile cases, such as the Sally Frank case (Frank sued several eating clubs and the University for allowing discrimination against women at eating clubs), can also be found in this subseries.

Subseries 3O: Rees and Rudenstine--Graduate School, 1967-1987, consists of records related to the Graduate School at Princeton. The provost was rarely directly involved in graduate school issues, so this subseries is small. Topics include Graduate School admission, fellowships, and housing. More detailed information on Graduate School-related topics can be found in the Graduate School Records (AC127).

Subseries 3P: Rees and Rudenstine--Personal Correspondence, 1971-1986, holds Neil Rudenstine's correspondence from his days as dean of the college through his tenure as provost. Correspondents include other academics, administrators of academic institutions, alumni, politicians, and others. These files are arranged alphabetically by correspondent.

Subseries 3Q: Rees and Rudenstine--President's Office, 1967-1987, consists of records related to the Office of the President, including minutes of the Minority Affairs Committee established by President Goheen, reports to the president by the provost, and general statements and policy on dissent by administrators during the Vietnam War.

Subseries 3R: Rees and Rudenstine--Priorities Committee, 1968-1985, consists of the provost's records on the work of the Priorities Committee, a committee of the CPUC chaired by the provost. The committee is responsible for the appropriations and budgetary decisions of the University. These files document base-cutting measures taken in the late 1970s, funding allocation, and other issues. Other information on the University's finances during this time period can be found in subseries 3M. With the exception of a small amount of general material located at the beginning, this subseries is arranged by fiscal year.

Subseries 3S: Rees and Rudenstine--Public Affairs, 1966-1988, contains records related to University publicity and public events, including documents on Commencement, the communications office, the events office, and especially government relations. Topics related to local, state, and federal government issues are represented.

Subseries 3T: Rees and Rudenstine--Research, 1966-1988, consists of records related to special academic research programs and facilities at Princeton, such as the Art Museum, the Library, the Plasma Physics Lab, computing, and the University Research Board. The provost was the administrator directly responsible for the oversight of several of these facilities (the library and the plasma physics lab, for example), and so the records of this subseries are quite detailed.

Subseries 3U: Rees and Rudenstine--Student Affairs, 1968-1986, contains records pertaining to students, student organizations, and the dean of student affairs. Subjects documented here include the Committee on Undergraduate Residential Life (CURL) plans to institute a residential college system for freshmen and sophomores, athletic programs, eating clubs, student fees, and student centers with various themes such as the Women's Center, the Yavneh House, and the International Center.
