The advisory councils were established by the Board of Trustees in 1941 to support the efforts of each academic department in defining objectives, assessing performance, and communicating with those outside the university. Each council is appointed by the Board of Trustees and includes at least one alumnus. By the 1980s the councils were overseen by the Dean of Faculty.
