Collection Description & Creator Information

Scope and Contents

Consists of approximately 3500 glass plate negatives and prints containing images of Princeton University, primarily of the campus and buildings

Arrangement

All descriptive information was transcribed from material enclosures. The source of these descriptions is unknown. Due to the unreliability of these transcribed descriptions, no extensive arrangement of the materials has been undertaken. In order to help facilitate search, some descriptions have been grouped by common theme.

Collection History

Acquisition:

This collection has been assembled through multiple accessions

Appraisal

Appraisal information was not recorded at time of accessioning

Processing Information

Collection is mostly unprocessed, with some minimal processing on numbered negatives and prints.

During a survey of the collection in September and October of 2019, all descriptive information was transcribed from material enclosures by Kimberly McCauley. The original source of these descriptions is unknown. Due to the unreliability of these transcribed descriptions, and the fragility of the materials, no extensive arrangement of the materials has been undertaken. In order to help facilitate search, some descriptions have been grouped by common theme. Any discrepencies between description and corresponding material is a result of prior descriptive work.

In some cases plates are labeled with more then one identifying number. Although these numbers do not correspond to prints within the collection, they have been noted in the items description.

Access & Use

Conditions Governing Access

Access to the glass-plate negatives is restricted due to their fragility. Where prints of the negatives are present, the prints are open for research use. Though digitization may not be possible for every negative, researchers may make requests to digitize material according to Mudd Library's policy on digitization of photographs

Conditions Governing Use

Single copies may be made for research purposes. To cite or publish quotations that fall within Fair Use, as defined under U. S. Copyright Law, no permission is required. The Trustees of Princeton University hold copyright to all materials generated by Princeton University employees in the course of their work. For instances beyond Fair Use, if copyright is held by Princeton University, researchers do not need to obtain permission, complete any forms, or receive a letter to move forward with use of materials from the Princeton University Archives.

For instances beyond Fair Use where the copyright is not held by the University, while permission from the Library is not required, it is the responsibility of the researcher to determine whether any permissions related to copyright, privacy, publicity, or any other rights are necessary for their intended use of the Library's materials, and to obtain all required permissions from any existing rights holders, if they have not already done so. Princeton University Library's Special Collections does not charge any permission or use fees for the publication of images of materials from our collections, nor does it require researchers to obtain its permission for said use. The department does request that its collections be properly cited and images credited. More detailed information can be found on the Copyright, Credit and Citations Guidelines page on our website.
