Abstract
Jonathan Belcher, was a merchant and colonial governor of the Provinces of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and New Jersey and was instrumental in the founding of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton). The Jonathan Belcher Collection consists of collected research materials regarding Jonathan Belcher's relation to the history of Princeton University and consist of correspondence, articles, clippings, and copies of original materials from Belcher collections held at Princeton and elsewhere.

The Jonathan Belcher Collection consists of collected research materials regarding Jonathan Belcher's relation to the history of Princeton University. The papers consist of correspondence, articles, clippings, and copies of original materials from Belcher collections held at Princeton and elsewhere. Topics covered include Belcher's contributions to the foundations of the college library, the preservation of the Belcher Mansion in Elizabeth, and representations of Belcher in portraits and prints.
Collection History
- Acquisition:
The origin of this collection is unclear. Many of the collected documents and the folder titles bear the hand of Varnum Lansing Collins, former Secretary of the University and one of the University's first historians. It also appears that contributions to the collection were made by others such as Moses Taylor Pyne, Charles McAlpin, Alexander Clark, and Alexander Leitch.
