Collection Creator Biography:

Princeton University. Office of Career Services.

Originally established in 1912 as the Self-Help Bureau, the Office of Career Services is an organizational unit of the Office of the Vice President for Campus Life that provides career resources and programming for both undergraduate and graduate students. The original bureau had been created to aid students with financial needs to secure employment during and between the academic years as well after graduation. The bureau underwent a name change in 1920 (Bureau of Appointments and Self Help) and 1921 (Bureau of Appointments and Student Employment) to more accurately reflect its role in career counseling, vocational placement for graduates, and employment for current students.

Twenty years later in 1941, the bureau assumed greater responsibilities for work-study, teacher placement, and alumni appointments in addition to arranging job interviews and dedicating itself to senior job placement. This new set of responsibilities hastened a new designation as the Bureau of Student Placement. Gordon G. Sikes '16 served as the new bureau's first director and held the office for over twenty years until his retirement in 1962, at which time Warren P. Elmer '42 assumed the position and soon changed the name of the unit to the Career and Study Services Division. Following a two-year stint as Counseling and Career Services, the Office of Career Services begin its inaugural year in 1968.
