A copy of a deed granting land from Tapehow, Rarawakon, Waweyask, Pequacheek, Powas, Nonzacum, Owanamus, Orewandeca to Edward Earle Junior, Theophilus Pierson, Jasper Crane, George Harrison, John Harrison of Elizabeth Town, John Morris, Eliphalet Johnson John, John Cooper, Robert Young, Daniel Dod, and William Brant. The land described includes portions of Morris and Somerset Counties along the Passiack, a tract "in the province of West Jersey at a place (in our tongue) called by the name Mehipaning on the west side of the south branch of Passaick River. Beginning at the mouth of said Mehipaning River and so up said river surrounding as it runs until it comes unto or near the Mine Mountain and so via a straight line drawn to a certain chestnut tree marked on four sides standing by a small brook at the north end of said Mine Mountain and from thence running south under the said mountain by said brook to a white oak tree marked on four sides thence along to a brook called (in our tongue) by the name of Saconotheungue and forming along said brook to another white oak tree also marked on four sides thence south east along by the side of the great swamp to a black oak tree marked on four sides standing by the end of the swamp thence to a white oak tree marked and standing by the river where it bears the name Poquapoch and so down said river as runs to the place where it at first began." These lands are part of the ancestral territory of the Munsee people.
Munsee witnesses represented in this document include: Wankanawaken, Macksory and Mansscum. Settler witnesses represented in this document include: John Johnson, Jonathon Sayer, John Gardner, Edward Ball, Jeremiah Osborn, and Eleazer Lamson.
This deed, a copy of the original, records an event that took place on December 31, 1701, and was entered into the records of the Province of New Jersey by William Pinhorn on November 29, 1709. The deed is marked as No. 19.
