AMsS. Fragments of Washington's undelivered first inaugural address. [Before his inauguration as President, Washington asked Colonel David Humphreys to draft some remarks for the inaugural ceremony. Humphreys evidently responded with a lengthy speech, which Washington copied onto 73 pages. This speech was never used. In the 1820s, Washington biographer Jared Sparks came across the speech and decided that since it bore little resemblance to the actual speech given by Washington, it was not important to publish. He split up the manuscript and gifted pages and pieces of pages to friends and family. The entire manuscript has never been recovered, though parts of it have been pieced together. This collection includes all of pages 5, 6, 23, and 24, and the bottom third of pages 15 and 16. One of the fragments is bound in a volume with a note on its provenance.
