Scope and Contents

The collection consists entirely of material relating to Storm, a novel by Stewart (Princeton Class of 1917) published in 1941. The collection contains one complete early draft of the book, draft fragments, and the final manuscript, marked for typesetting. In addition, Stewart's research notes, news clippings, and a small folder of correspondence documenting the depth of his research are included.

Collection Creator Biography:

Stewart, George R., 1895-1980

George Rippey Stewart was an English professor and novelist, as well as a founding member (1956-1957) of the American Name Society. Storm, featuring as protagonist a Pacific storm named "Maria," prompted the National Weather Service to begin giving personal names to large storms.

Acquisition:

Gift of George R. Stewart in 1942 (Accession number 12471).
