Collection Description & Creator Information

The collection contains Vielé-Griffin manuscripts and miscellany, but the bulk of the collection consists of family and literary correspondence of Vielé-Griffin. Among the family correspondence are letters by the poet's father and sister which shed light on the experience of the American-born's childhood in France. The literary correspondence includes the poet's letters to Albert Mockel, Stuart Merrill, and Edouard Dujardin. In addition, there are letters from Edmund Gosse, Stephen Massett, Thomas Sturge Moore, George Moore, Rodin, Johannes Schlaf, Henri Barbusse, Francis Jammes, Marcel Schwob, and James McNeill Whistler. There are also five autograph manuscripts of Vielé-Griffin's verse: "En Arcadie," "Les Brumes," "Pour le 2 Novembre," "Communion," and "Samle France."
