Collection Overview
Collection Description & Creator Information
- Description:
The collection consists of manuscripts and correspondence of Machen and an equal amount of manuscripts and correspondence of Machen admirers and collectors, particularly the members of the Machen Society, founded in 1948 after Machen's death. Included are Machen's The Secret Glory (London: M. Secker, [1922], page proofs), Ornaments in Jade (New York: Knopf, 1924, signed autograph manuscript), The Children of the Pool (London: Hutchinson, [1936], autograph and typed manuscript), The Cosy Room and Other Stories (London: Rich & Cowan, [1936], typed manuscript), various short works, such as introductions and prefaces, address books, and photographs of his residences, 1863-1930.
In addition, there is Wesley Sweetser's University of Colorado doctoral dissertation, Arthur Machen, His Writings (published in 1964), with its lengthy bibliography. Others amply represented in the collection are Nathan van Patten, first president of the Arthur Machen Society, and Joseph Kelly Vodrey and Adrian Goldstone, active members.
