The collection contains approximately 50 letters from 36 different authors addressed to Theodore Spicer-Simson mainly during the preparation of his Men of Letters of the British Isles: Portrait Medallions from the Life (1924). Also included are his etchings for the medallions. Some of the writers represented are Robert Bridges, Joseph Conrad, John Galsworthy, Thomas Hardy, A. E. Housman, W. H. Hudson, James Joyce, George Bernard Shaw, H. G. Wells, and W. B. Yeats.

Spicer-Simson
Theodore Spicer-Simson was a British sculptor and medallist. He is best known for his medals, most of which are large cast works. In this form he portrayed many of the eminent British, Irish, and American figures of his day, and in the early 1920s he worked on a series of medallic portraits of contemporary authors. Later, living in the United States, he eventually acquired American citizenship.
