- Description:
The collection consists of the papers of the Dayton family of Elizabeth, N.J., and contains works, correspondence, and documents of Jonathan Dayton (Princeton Class of 1776), Elias Dayton, William Dayton, William B. Dayton, and Aaron Ogden Dayton (Princeton Class of 1813.) Jonathan Dayton's material includes sixteen anonymous and confidential letters to James Madison regarding the presidential elections; and several letters to Elias Dayton. Also included is a notebook of Jonathan Dayton which may have originally contained lectures numbered I-XII, of which only lectures X-XII on theology are present; and a deed for land in Morristown, NJ, signed by Dayton. There is an address by Aaron Ogden Dayton to the Princeton University Cliosophic Society, a Fourth of July oration by him, and an eleven-page biographical sketch of him. There are two letters by Elias Dayton which were written during the seige of Yorktown, Pa., in 1781.
