Consists of documents and correspondence of Smith Thompson (Princeton Class of 1788) covering, for the most part, the years (1823-1843) when he served on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of documents and correspondence of Thompson (Princeton Class of 1788) covering, for the most part, the years when he served on the Supreme Court. Included in the collection are letters involving court matters as well as correspondence between Thompson and his second wife, the former Eliza Livingston, his daughter, Mary Louis Clark, and other family members. Among the documents are Thompson's will (1843) and papers dealing with financial matters, such as checks, promissory notes, and orders of payment.

Thompson

A graduate of Princeton (Class of 1788), Smith Thompson was an American jurist who served as secretary of the Navy (1819-1823) and associate justice of the Supreme Court (1823-1843).
