Consists of the German manuscript of, and other material related to, The Italian Madrigal (1949) by the German-American musicologist Alfred Einstein.

The collection contains the typescript of the original, unpublished German manuscript of Einstein's The Italian Madrigal, which was published in English translation in 1949 by the Princeton University Press. The collection includes the musical examples used in the book.

Collection Creator Biography:

Einstein, Alfred, 1880-1952.

Alfred Einstein (1880-1952) was a German-American musicologist and music editor. After leaving Germany, he lived, first in London, and finally, in the United States. During his career in the United States, he held teaching posts at universities including Smith College, Columbia University, Princeton University, the University of Michigan, and the Hartt School of Music in Hartford, Connecticut. He was noted as one of the widest-ranging music historians in the first half of the 20th century.
