- Description:
The collection consists of a typescript copy (carbon) of Hottenstein's Migrant Pennsylvanian, an unpublished autobiography in which he reflects on the changes in transportation, economics, politics, and entertainment which took place during the decades from his birth in 1876 up to 1966. In the course of his reminiscences he discusses the Centennial Exhibition of 1876 in Philadelphia, the Standard Oil Company, the United Fruit Company, Shell Oil Company, the presidential administrations of Grover Cleveland through Franklin D. Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson and World War I, theater and motion picture developments (Julia Marlowe, the film Birth of a Nation, the Metropolitan Opera, etc.), the replacement of the horse and buggy by the automobile, prohibition, and, briefly, World War II.
