    <head>Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements</head>
<p>For preservation reasons, original analog
and digital media may not be read or played back in the
reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media
but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog
audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality
standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests
are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note,
the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks
to as long as several months and there may be financial costs
associated with the process.

    <head>Scope and Contents</head>
<p>The collection consists of selected eighteenth- and nineteenth-century papers of Samuel Ladd Howell and other members of the Howell family of Woodbury, Gloucester, and Princeton, New Jersey. Included are receipts for miscellaneous purchases, and documents such as promissory notes, statements of account, conditions of sale, and land evaluations. Also included are a land survey, maps of timber lots sold, leases, and some correspondence of Samuel Ladd Howell, his father, Joshua Ladd Howell, his brother, Paschall, and his mother, Anna Howell. Thre is also an account book of the fishing business partnership of "Howell and Whitehall" at Fancy Hill Fishery, located on the Howell family property, dated 1797-1799.</p>  </scopecontent>

    <head>Biographical / Historical</head>
<p>Samuel Ladd Howell was born into the prominent Howell family of Woodbury, Gloucester County, and Princeton, New Jersey. He entered the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1806, but had to withdraw after the second year due to a violent attack of inflammation to the eyes. He commenced the study of medicine in Philadelphia in 1812, was a resident surgeon at the Pennsylvania Hospital. On the death of Dr. John Van Cleeve in Princeton, Howell moved there in February 1827, where his duties soon became one of the most extensive n the state. In the fall of 1830, he wa appointed professor of Anatomy and Physiology at the College of New Jersey, which chair he filled till his death in 1835.</p>  </bioghist>
