Description:

The collection consists of selected correspondence of Naumburg (Princeton Class of 1924) as well as author files relating to his collecting interests. There is a substantial amount of correspondence (1949-1961) with Elmer Adler relating to the Graphic Arts Collection of the Princeton University Library, of which Adler was curator (1940-1952). Reports of the Collection (1949-1951), fundraising activities, and other related printed material are provided. Also present are letters by Francis Comstock, Aaron Copland, Lawrence Heyl, Arthur C. Holden, Kenneth H. Rockey, among others. Included are photographs of Thomas Wolfe and Asheville (N.C.) locales featured in Look Homeward, Angel, photographs of Joseph Conrad and his English residences, and an original, signed etching of the sailing ship named for him. A reprint of Naumburg's article "My Favorite Bookseller" ( Princeton University Library Chronicle, Vol. XLVIII, Number 2, Winter 1987), which describes his relationship with Alfred F. Goldsmith, is also included, as well as Goldsmith's original drawings which were used to illustrate the article. Furthermore, there is a small selection of correspondence regarding Naumburg's article "A Seventeenth Century Book-label Problem," together with two off-prints, and a related photograph.
