Collection Creator Biography:

James

Marquis James was a historian and biographer born on August 29, 1891, in Springfield, Missouri. When James was just three years old his family moved to Oklahoma, and this exposure to the Western frontier influenced the rest of his life. James served in World War I, which interrupted his developing journalism career. His 1930 book, The Raven, won a Pulitzer Prize. For the next several years, James became captivated by Andrew Jackson and published two books about him: The Border Captain (1933) and Portrait of a President (1937). James wrote several revealing books about various business companies, including his work on Alfred I. DuPont, The Family Rebel (1941) about Alfred I. DuPont, a member of the famous DuPont family of chemical manufacturing. He married Jacqueline Mary Parsons, but had no children and died on November 19, 1955.
