Scope and Contents

This series consists of Vargas Llosa's political correspondence, primarily covering the years 1988 to 1991, with the general public and with Peruvian politicians such as Fernando Belaúnde Terry, Luis Bedoya Reyes, and Javier Silva Ruete. There is also a large amount of correspondence with other leaders of Movimiento Libertad and Vargas Llosa's presidential campaign staff such as Luis Bustamante Belaunde, Miguel Cruchaga, Miguel Vega Alvear, Enrique Ghersi, Frederick Cooper Llosa, and Jorge Salmón Jordán. There are also manuscripts of speeches delivered by Vargas Llosa; preliminary drafts and printed versions of publications of FREDEMO and Movimiento Libertad such as Bases para el Plan de Gobierno (1990-1995) , Acción para el cambio , and El país que vendrá ; and correspondence and printed material related to two conferences held in Lima, Peru: the First National Congress of Movimiento Libertad (April 14-16, 1989), and the other, a world meeting sponsored by the Peruvian association "Associación Pro-Desarrollo," "La Revolución de la Libertad" (March 7-9, 1990). The sub-series for Movimiento Libertad and FREDEMO include manuscripts of speeches and political papers by Vargas Llosa and others. The photographs sub-series also includes approximately 20 photographs of Alberto Fujimori campaigning in Peru during the first round of elections (April 1990), and a small amount of miscellaneous printed material. This series is arranged into nine subseries: General Correspondence, Campaign Correspondence, Movimento Libertad [Libertad Movement], Frente Democrático [FREDEMO], Photographs, Miscellaneous Printed Material, Acción Solidaria [Joint Action], Programa de Apoyo Social [PAS] [Social Support Program], and Miscellaneous.

Open for research.

For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media, but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Patrons may request digital copies of original analog media, but will be responsible for the cost of digital conversion, payable in advance. Turn-around time for such requests will depend on the size and scope of the project. Requests should be directed to Public Services staff.
