Description:

The collection consists primarily of correspondence and working papers of Gilbert Chinard. In addition, there is a significant amount of printed material and some correspondence relating to the Institut Français de Washington (D.C.). Included are correspondence of Gilbert Chinard and Jules A. Baisnee, two trustees of the Institut, printed volumes (in French) in its Historical Documents series of publications, and many other small works published by the Institut, often edited by Chinard, relating to Franco-American studies. Also present is an autograph manuscript of James Dunn Hufham's English translation of Les Français Sous Les Treize Etoiles (1775-1783) by Andre Lasseray.
