Description:

The collection consists of selected papers of Woodruff (Princeton Class of 1785) and various members of his family of Trenton, N.J. Included are correspondence with his brother, Aaron Dickinson Woodruff (Princeton Class of 1779), mayor of Trenton from 1794 to 1797, concerning the construction of George Woodruff's house, "Oaklands," near Trenton; correspondence with his wife, Jean Houstoun Woodruff, concerning the deaths of their sons Elias and George; correspondence of a surviving son Patrick Houstoun Woodruff; and papers relating to the settlement of the estate of George and Ann Houstoun (George Woodruff's in-laws) of Savannah, Ga. Also present are four photographs (1896) of "Oaklands," which later became the Trenton Country Club.

Additional material to the collection contains items of Elias, Joseph, Jr., Philemon, and Samuel Woodruff. There is a deed for a house and lot on Main Street in Princeton, N.J., of Thomas Egbert, signed by Elias and Mary Woodruff and dated Feb. 14, 1780. In addition, there are receipts related to the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) and the Rev. Aaron Burr, a typewritten record of unpublished notes of Elias Woodruff from the Princeton Historical Society, and a genealogical list of the Elizabethtown and Newark line of the Woodruff family, dated 1938.
