Blume, Tan, Ginsberg, and Troupe each discuss how their own work has been subject to varying types of censorship. To further their point, each reads from their work or other literature that has influenced them. Blume reads from her book Deenie. Troupe reads from a book he co-authored titled Miles: The Autobiography of Miles Davis with Quincy Troupe. Tan reads from writings that influenced her which include passages from the Bible, The Catcher in the Rye, and Psychopathia Sexualis. Ginsberg reads a non-smoking anti-commercial, a passage from Howl, and an excerpt of William Burroughs' Naked Lunch. Other topics that are widely talked about include obscenity, Jesse Helms, Jr., NEA grants, and language used in the arts.
