Collection Description & Creator Information

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of 57 black and white photographs (5"x7"), with notes, taken by Gilbertson of the aftermath of an earthquake on the Ionian island of Cephalonia, mainly at its capital city of Argostolion, in August 1953. The photographs depict the destruction of many buildings and streets, the disruption of daily life, and relief services carried out by the British Royal Navy.

Additions consist of 125 black and white (5"x7") photographs, with a CD-ROM of the photographic images and typed history and description of the photographs by Norman Gilbertson. The photographs depict mainly village scenes and relief efforts after World War II and during the Civil War (1944-1949) in Greece. They were taken by Gilbertson as leader of a team of relief workers from Great Britain's Friends Relief Service (Quakers) and as a member of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA).
