- Description:
The collection consists of correspondence received by various members of the Twining family, originally of New Haven and Litchfield, Connecticut, and later of New York. There are letters both personal and professional in nature to Stephen Twining, a steward and treasurer of Yale College, his son, Alexander C. Twining (1801-1889, Yale Class of 1820), an inventor, civil engineer, and astronomer, and his son, Kinsley Twining (1832-1901, Yale Class of 1853), a Congregationalist clergyman and literary editor of the New York weeklies The Independent and The Evangelist. Also present is some miscellaneous correspondence of other Twinings, and of the Stevens and Gridley families, related to the Twinings by marriage, and some photographs and documents.
