Materials in this subseries consist of poems and prose written when Kunitz was an undergraduate at Harvard, notes and notebooks, manuscripts of volumes of poetry, prose, and individual poems and essays, and dozens of translations that Kunitz did through the 1960s and 1970s of Russian and Eastern European poets.

Poems are arranged alphabetically by title. The two prose pieces are filed at the end.
These writings consist of poems and two short prose pieces that Kunitz submitted for assignments at Harvard College. A few may have been written after Kunitz earned his master's degree in 1927, for they bear a New York City address. A fine example of Kunitz's earliest work, most of the items bear the professor's comments, and in many cases, a grade. It appears that for the earlier poems Kunitz signed his poems "Apeneck Sweeney," though later dropped this moniker.
There are two drafts: one, a poem, the other in prose form. Both include professor's notes.

All items included are autograph notes, with one typewritten draft of an essay on Theodore Roethke. One set of notes, entitled "U of Cal. - Berkeley" is dated 1960 April 6, but all other items are undated. Of note: a handwritten draft called "The Status of the Artist" comments on a topic discussed by "The Club," dating the draft to circa 1960.

A jewel among the collection, this box contains hundreds of index cards that Kunitz kept, a veritable card catalog of quotations, speeches he made, and notes and writings on poets, artists, and various subjects. Filed alphabetically, the index cards cover a wide range of subject areas. Although Kunitz was a seasoned biographer, having written reference manuals for the H.W. Wilson Company, the cards are not biographical or subject studies. The catalog is rather a mnemonic device for recalling key aspects of literary and artistic works and subjects. For instance, the card for "Carroll, Lewis" bears a short excerpt from Carroll's Sylvie and Bruno . The entry for "metaphor" spans three index cards, written on both sides, containing quotations from Robert Frost, Aristotle, William Blake, Cecil Day Lewis. The cards are handwritten and typewritten, and many include clippings. While some have dates, the majority are undated.
These files include materials related to various published books of poetry, including notes, drafts of manuscripts, galley proofs, and correspondence with editors and publishers. While the majority of materials pertain to Kunitz's later works, such as Passing Through (1995), The Collected Poems (2000), and The Wild Braid (2005), there are materials from earlier books as well. The files are arranged by book, and then chronologically by publication date.

In addition to Kunitz's translations, this group of materials includes translations of Morits by fellow poet and friend, William Jay Smith, with co-translator Vera Dunham.
In addition to these poems, both translated by Smith and Dunham, the folder contains another of their translations, "Three Lakes" from Aleksandr Tkachenko. Kunitz kept these materials with his own translations of Morits, and so the order has been retained here.
It is not clear if the date given is the date the poem was written, or when it was translated.
