Abstract

The collection consists of papers of Herbert Francis Brett-Smith reflecting his position as literary editor (1920-1928) of the Shakespeare Head Press, which was founded in 1904 at Stratford-upon-Avon, England, by A. H. Bullen (1857-1920). Much of the collection is correspondence as well as notices of board meetings, profit and loss account statements, balance sheets, statements on policy and location of the Shakespeare Head Press, a few clippings, and printed lists of publications and Shakespeare Head Press brochures.

Scope and Contents

Consists of papers of Brett-Smith reflecting his position as literary editor (1920-1928) of the Shakespeare Head Press, which was founded in 1904 at Stratford-upon-Avon, England, by A. H. Bullen (1857-1920). Included are 86 letters received by Brett-Smith from Basil Blackwell, Herbert Farjeon, S. Gaselee, Sir Sidney Lee, P. Lister, R. B. McKerrow, and Bernard H. Newdigate. There are two letters, 1896 and 1900, by A. H. Bullen to a Mr. Firth. Also present are Brett-Smith's drafts for his short biography of A. H. Bullen written for the Dictionary of National Biography, manuscript notes on Bullen by P. E. Matheson, and manuscripts and galleys by Brett-Smith for his "Foreword" to Bullen's final work, an edition of Shakespeare's Sonnets, published posthumously in 1921, with a manuscript of "Suggested additions and omissions" to the "Foreword" by P. Lister.

An addition to the papers includes about 35 letters to Brett-Smith by Stephen Gaselee, B. H. Newdigate, Basil Blackwell, and others, as well as notices of board meetings, profit and loss account statements, balance sheets, statements on policy and location of the Shakespeare Head Press, a few clippings, and printed lists of publications and Shakespeare Head Press brochures.

The following standard abbreviations, or their variations, are used to identify materials in this collection: ACS = Autograph Card Signed, ALsS = autograph letters signed, AMs = autograph manuscript, TMs = Typewritten Manuscript.
