Collection Description & Creator Information


This collection of autograph letters, dated 1785?-1898, by Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, John Hancock, Henry Clay, John Quincy Adams, and other American statesmen, consists of 24 letters, 3 signatures, 3 newspaper clippings, and a poem by Louisa C. Adams in pocket of front cover. Compiled by John S. Gulick and his wife, Elizabeth Milligan Gulick. Previously bound in a black lacquered binding with leather spine and pearl bosses in the four corners on upper and lower boards, with a painting of a bouquet of flowers surrounded by an ornate gold border on upper cover.

The following standard abbreviations, or their variations, are used to identify materials in this collection: ALS = autograph letter signed, TLS = typed letter signed, AMsS = autograph manuscript signed.

The collection was formed as a result of a departmental practice of combining into one collection manuscript material of various accessions relating to a particular author.
