Description:

The collection consists of the personal and working papers of Juan García Ponce. It features multiple drafts of his novels, including La casa en la playa, Figura de paja, and El gato; his plays, including Doce y una, trece and a number of unpublished works; screenplays, including Tajimara, plans and outlines for screenplays, and unproduced works; short stories, some previously uncollected; and essay collections, as well as many uncollected essays. Also included are video recordings of movies based on García Ponce's work, conferences pertaining to his work, and presentations of awards to the author. The audio recordings include a number of literary and artistic conferences and a reading of Tajimara by García Ponce himself.

García Ponce's correspondence with literary figures, artists, publishers, and critics, covering the period 1949-2003, includes letters to and by Inés Arredondo, Miguel Cervantes, Manuel Felguerez, Alberto Gironella, Juan José Gurrola, Pierre Klossowski, Denise Levertov, Juan Vicente Melo, Octavio Paz, Vicente Rojo, Juan Soriano, and Mario Vargas Llosa.

Single photocopies may be made for research purposes. No further photoduplication of copies of material in the collection can be made when Princeton University Library does not own the original. The library has no information on the status of literary rights in the collection and researchers are responsible for determining any questions of copyright.

Publication of any words written by Juan García Ponce and his family (Mercedes de Oteyza de Felguerez, Mercedes Beatty, and Juan García de Oteyza) are protected by copyright and cannot be published without the written permission of Mercedes Beatty or Juan García de Oteyza.
