Consists of 14 large albumen prints, mounted, in an accordion fold (total dimensions approximately 26.2 x 469.5 cm.), depicting an elevated view of the city of Constantinople, presently known as Istanbul, and its environs, view of the Golden Horn from the Galata Tower, the Bosphorus Strait, boats and ships, many rooftops, minarets, mosques, and other buildings, and passageways. Inscription: (recto, mount) lower center, below plates seven and eight, printed in black and gold ink: "PANORAMA DE CONSTANTINOPLE / VUE / prise de la / TOUR DE CALATA / par G. Berggren." Prints are kept together in an enclosure with the gilted title on the cover, "PANORAMA DE CONSTANTINOPLE." Dimensions closed: 41.5 x 42 cm.

Description:

Consists of 8 large albumen prints (each approximately 26 x 34 cm.), mounted, in an accordion fold (total dimensions approximately 26.2 x 272.5 cm.), depicting an elevated view of the city of Constantinople and the Golden Horn from Seraskier, or Beyazit, Tower. The church of Saint Sophia, boats sail along the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus, which features two bridges, and the domes and minarets of several mosques can be seen among the rooftops of the city buildings. Included also are the mosque of Sultan Suleiman, the mosque of Sultan Ahmed, most of the Golden Horn, the Topkapi Palace, and the mosque of Sultan Osman. Inscription: (recto, mount) lower center, below plates five and six, printed in black ink: "PANORAMA DE CONSTANTINOPLE / VUE / prise de la / TOUR DE SÉRASKIÉRAT / par G. Berggren. Scope and Contents

The open collection currently consists of photographs of various sites in Istanbul (Constantinople), Turkey, and 1 site in Bursa, taken by Berggren.

Collection Creator Biography:

Berggren, G. (Guillaume), 1835-1920

Berggren (1835-1920) was born in Stockholm. Originally apprenticed as a carpenter and following a visit to Constantinople in 1866, opened a photographic studio there in the 1870s at Grand Rue de Péra, where he was assisted by his niece Hilda Ullin. Berggren later was appointed photographer to the Royal Swedish Court. He is best known for his views of Constantinople and other Turkish cities. On his death he was buried with his photographic equipment.

Acquisition:

Purchased from Krul Antiquarian Books, Bernard J. Shapero, and Foto-Antiquariat Fahl in 2005-2008, in part, with matching funds provided by the Program in Hellenic Studies with the support of the Stanley J. Seeger Hellenic Fund, and by the Department of Near Eastern Studies (AM2005-61, 2007-108, 2008-81).
