Collection Description & Creator Information
The collection consists of correspondence and documents (1783-1793) of Samuel Beach, and items (1823-1884) relating to the Beach and Jones families. Family correspondence dates from the latter half of the 18th and early 19th centuries. Included are a letter to Beach's father, W. Enoch Beach, a letter to Mrs. H. Beach describing college life, a letter to John Croes, and one to Rev. W. Green. It also includes a letter from Paul L. Jones to the cashier of the Mechanics Bank; a letter from C. Van Rensselaer to his brother, the Rev. Samuel Beach Jones; and two letters from Keating Simons, chairman of the Bank of South America. Documents included are the certificate of Samuel Beach's membership in the American Philosophical Society, signed by its president, Benjamin Franklin; his diploma from the College of New Jersey, dated 7 October 1783; a certificate of membership in the American Whig Society, dated 2 September 1783; an obituary of Samuel Beach; and an address at his funeral (May 15, 1793) at the Old Independent Church, in Charleston, South Carolina, by the Rev. Dr. Heith.
