Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements
For preservation reasons, original analog
and digital media may not be read or played back in the
reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media
but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog
audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality
standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests
are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note,
the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks
to as long as several months and there may be financial costs
associated with the process.

Scope and Contents
The collection consists of letters by brothers John and Joseph Cabell Breckinridge. Included are eight letters by Joseph, written while a student at Princeton, to his uncle Col. James Breckinridge, and letters by John to Rev. Archibald Alexander, Rev. Joseph Wolff, Leslie Combs, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Greenburg W. Ridgeley.

The collection was formed as a result of a Departmental practice of combining into one collection material of various accessions relating to a particular person, family, or subject.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
The letters to Rev. Archibald Alexander, Leslie Combs, and Rev. Joseph Wolff were purchases.
The 1823 letter to the Speaker of the House of Representatives was the gift of Samuel Miller.
The 1817 letter to Greenburg Ridgeley was a gift of H. I. Caesar.
The eight letters to James Breckinridge were a gift of Henry Breckinridge. Various AM.

Breckinridge, John (1797-1841)
Biographical / Historical
John Breckinridge (Princeton Class of 1818), a Presbyterian clergyman and controversialist, was the son of John Breckinridge (1760-1806) and the brother of Joseph Cabell Breckinridge (Princeton Class of 1810). In 1820-21 John was a tutor at Princeton University and a student at the Princeton Theological Seminary; later, he was chaplain of Congress. After graduating from Princeton, Joseph went on to become a a lawyer, a Kentucky legislator, and eventually Kentucky's secretary of state.
