Scope and Contents

The collection consists of correspondence, a typed manuscript, and printed material related to Cather. Correspondents include Elmer Adler, Yaltah and Marutha Menuhin, and Julian Street. There is material regarding the Pynson Printers' edition of December Night including a mock-up of the cover and sample pages of the printed work. There is also a typescript of My First Novels (There Were Two), written for part six of the Colophon, with the final printed version of it.

Collection Creator Biography:

Cather, Willa, 1873-1947.

Willa Siebert Cather is among the most esteemed of American women authors. She is known for her depictions of U.S. prairie life in novels like O Pioneers!, My Antonia, and Death Comes for the Archbishop.

Acquisition:

The collection consists of multiple gifts and purchases. Cather's letter to Julian Street was a gift of Mrs. Julian Street (AM 21986); Letters from Elmer Adler regarding the Pynson Printers edition of Cather's December Night (AM 15137); Letters to Elmer Adler regarding "My First Novels" (AM 15126); 18 letters from Cather were purchased from Goodspeed's Bookshop in 1988 (AM 89-10).

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process. Requests should be directed through the Ask Us Form.
