Scope and Contents

The collection consists of selected correspondence of Dallas, as well as a rough draft of an oration he gave at Princeton on September 27, 1831. Correspondents include James Carnahan, Louis Jacob Cist, Alexander James Dallas (grandfather), H. C. Dallas (brother), James M. Mason, William S. Pennington, and John L. Wolff.

Collection Creator Biography:

Dallas, George Mifflin, 1792-1864

George Mifflin Dallas, a senator from Pennsylvania and a vice president (1845-1849) of the United States, was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on July 10, 1792. He graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1810, studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1813. He died in Philadelphia on December 31, 1864.

Acquisition:

Dallas's letter to James Carnahan was a gift of Professor N. C. Cameron on November 27, 1918.

Dallas's lettter to William S. Pennington was a gift of J. A. Farrington on March 12, 1960. Various AM.

The collection was formed as a result of a Departmental practice of combining into one collection material of various accessions relating to a particular person, family, or subject.
