Description:

The collection consists chiefly of correspondence and documents from 1861-1862 when S. Meredith Dickinson was commissioned as a paymaster in the United States Navy, assigned to the U.S. Sloop of War "Dale". Included are his cashbook for 1861, a quarterly clothing report, and a list of sick sent to the U.S. Naval Hospital in the early months of 1862. Also included is a letter (1790) and a United States Loan Office certificate (1799) of Philemon Dickinson, his great-grandfather.

Dickinson, S. Meredith (Samuel Meredith)

Samuel Meredith Dickinson was born at Trenton, N.J., on June 25, 1839. He studied law until 1861when he entered the military service of New Jersey as a private in the National Guard, and was later discharged to accept an appointment and commission as paymaster in the United States Navy, assigned to the U.S. Sloop of War Dale. In 1863 he was admitted as an attorney, and three years later as a counselor-at-law of New Jersey. He was the author of Chancery Precedents (1879) and Probate Court Practice (1884).

The collection was formed as a result of a Departmental practice of combining into one collection material of various accessions relating to a particular person, family, or subject.

The cash book dated 1861 bears the bookplate of "Abraham E. Cutter, Bookseller, Stationer."
