- Description:
The collection consists chiefly of correspondence and documents from 1861-1862 when S. Meredith Dickinson was commissioned as a paymaster in the United States Navy, assigned to the U.S. Sloop of War "Dale". Included are his cashbook for 1861, a quarterly clothing report, and a list of sick sent to the U.S. Naval Hospital in the early months of 1862. Also included is a letter (1790) and a United States Loan Office certificate (1799) of Philemon Dickinson, his great-grandfather.

The collection was formed as a result of a Departmental practice of combining into one collection material of various accessions relating to a particular person, family, or subject.
The cash book dated 1861 bears the bookplate of "Abraham E. Cutter, Bookseller, Stationer."
