Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements
For preservation reasons, original analog
and digital media may not be read or played back in the
reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media
but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog
audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality

Scope and Contents
The collection consists of material collected by Hewett relating to the burning of Columbia, South Carolina, during the Civil War by the Union Army under General William T. Sherman. Included are seven small notebooks of information in the hand of Hewett, copied in 1919-1920 from source material, and photostats of maps of the city of Columbia.

Hewett, Waterman Thomas (1846-1921)
Biographical / Historical
Waterman Thomas Hewett was an educator and an editor. Professor of German language and literature at Cornell University, he retired in 1910. During his retirement he collected material on several favorite themes including materials from Southern archives on General Sherman's infamous march to the sea in Georgia during the Civil War.
