Abstract

Consists of a collection of literary manuscripts of the twentieth-century French novelist Jacques de Lacretelle.

Collection Description & Creator Information

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of four autograph manuscripts, in French, of two of Lacretelle's works, La Vie Inquiète de Jean Hermelin, his autobiographical novel, and "La Mort d'Hippolyte," a short story. The first manuscript is part of the final published version of what became La Vie Inquiète de Jean Hermelin. Written in black ink in a blue notebook labeled "Cahier 1," the manuscript is titled "Les Cahiers de Jean Hermelin " and signed "Jacques de Lacretelle, 1 rue de l'Alboni, Paris." The second manuscript continues "Les Cahiers de Jean Hermelin"; written in black and blue ink on unbound leaves in a folder marked "Suite du Cahier Bleu," it starts with chapter five and is signed by Lacretelle. Both contain holograph corrections and annotations by the author.

The third manuscript is for the short story "La Mort d'Hippolyte." It is written in black ink on both sides of unnumbered leaves (19) in a thin paper folder labeled "Manuscrit et Plan du Double Rival ou La Mort d'Hippolyte"; it is signed and dated "Versailles, décembre 1920." The fourth manuscript is also written on unnumbered leaves (37) in a thin paper folder marked "Manuscrit de la Mort d'Hippolyte"; it is signed and dated "Paris, janvier 1923." Both contain holograph corrections and annotations by the author.
