Consists primarily of account books of members of the Mowry family, who were among the first settlers of Providence, Rhode Island.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists primarily of account books of the Mowry (also called Morey) family of Providence and Smithfield, Rhode Island. Included is a mathematical notebook (for school?) of Jonathan Mowry, ca. 1726; two account books of "Lawyer" Joseph Mowry, dated 1752-1764 and 1662-1775, respectively, one including the original paper wrapper; three account books of Henry Mowry, dated 1722-1747; one account book of Elisha Mowry, ca. 1751; and a 1751 document of Daniel Mowry regarding a survey of a piece of land done by Daniel Abbot. Also included is a paper signed by John Aldrich and Job Mowry, Jr., settling their accounts "from the beginning of the world to this day," dated 1785.

The Mowry family was among the first to settle in Providence, Rhode Island. Henry Mowry was a brother of Joseph Mowry. "Lawyer" Joseph Mowry was Captain of the Trained Band of Smithfield, Rhode Island. Joseph had a son Job; Joseph and Henry had another brother Job, and their father was Daniel Mowry. Elisha Mowry was probably the son of Henry Mowry.

Collection History

Acquisition:

Mathematical notebook was a gift of Princeton Professor Bancroft H. Brown on Oct. 9, 1951 .

Account books, land document, and note with Aldrich's signature were given by Princeton Professor Bancroft H. Brown during the period of 1950-1967 .

Custodial History

The collection was formed as a result of a Departmental practice of combining into one collection material of various accessions relating to a particular person, family, or subject. Professor Brown, a descendant of Captains Joseph and Daniel Mowry, provided explanations of the items and a genealogy of the Mowry family.
