- Description:
The collection consists primarily of account books of the Mowry (also called Morey) family of Providence and Smithfield, Rhode Island. Included is a mathematical notebook (for school?) of Jonathan Mowry, ca. 1726; two account books of "Lawyer" Joseph Mowry, dated 1752-1764 and 1662-1775, respectively, one including the original paper wrapper; three account books of Henry Mowry, dated 1722-1747; one account book of Elisha Mowry, ca. 1751; and a 1751 document of Daniel Mowry regarding a survey of a piece of land done by Daniel Abbot. Also included is a paper signed by John Aldrich and Job Mowry, Jr., settling their accounts "from the beginning of the world to this day," dated 1785.

The collection was formed as a result of a Departmental practice of combining into one collection material of various accessions relating to a particular person, family, or subject. Professor Brown, a descendant of Captains Joseph and Daniel Mowry, provided explanations of the items and a genealogy of the Mowry family.
