The collection consists of a selected number of miscellaneous letters and documents of James Monroe, before and during his term as president of the United States.

Collection History

Acquisition:

The collection has resulted from the miscellaneous gifts of numerous donors and purchases over the years.

Land grant to Harrison Brown was a gift of W. H. Newhouse in 1926 (AM 9246).

Order to pay Hugh Mercer was a gift of Mrs. Henry Fairfield Osborne in 1926 (AM 9283).

Letter to John Randolph was a gift of Mrs. Charles McClintock in 1937 (AM 11480).

Letter to "Dear Sir" was a gift of Cyrus H. McCormick in 1947 (AM 13366).

Land grant to Frederick Millier was a gift of Percy H. Williams, Princeton Class of 1897, in 1948 (AM 13781).

Statement of expenses was a gift of Samuel Milbank, Princeton Class of 1927 and Robbin Milbank, Princeton Class of 1925, in 1949 (AM 13834).

Letter to S. Mitchell and steel engraving were a gift of Julian C. Sloss in 1962 (AM 17813).

Letters to Benton and Harrison were a gift of Benjamin H. Walker in 1971 (AM 21362).

Land grant to James LaTourrette was purchased in 2015 (AM 2016-4).

Custodial History

The collection was formed as a result of a Departmental practice of combining into one collection material of various accessions relating to a particular person, family, or subject.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process.
