Scope and Contents

The collection consists of miscellaneous papers of Platform magazine which include correspondence, typescripts, poems, galley proofs, and newspaper clippings. The correspondence includes two letters from Harold Owen to Frederick Woods, editor of the Platform, about his brother, the Scottish poet Wilfred Owen. There are two letters from Woods to Allen Tate about sending him the material in this collection, one letter from Tate to Woods, one letter from Sydney Goodsir Smith to Woods, one letter from Marvin Mudrich, and two letters in French, from François Parché to a Monsieur Eduard Champion. The poems include an English translation (9 pp., typescript) of The Serpent by the French poet Paul Valéry, translated by Charles Higham, which includes holograph corrections. Also included are two typescript poems in Scottish: Robert Garioch Sutherland's "Thoughts During a Music Festival" and Sydney Goodsir Smith's "The Kenless Strand." In addition, there are two galley proofs, as well as proof pages, of the summer 1955 edition of Platform, with autograpah corrections and annotations by G. S. Fraser, Nicholas Moore, Bernard Bergonzi, and Sydney Goodsir Smith.
