Collection Overview

Collection Description & Creator Information

Description:

The collection consists of twenty letters of Agnes Repplier. Eighteen of the letters are addressed to her friend Margaret Farrand (Mrs. Wilson Farrand); one letter is to Charles Wisner, and one letter to Charles Scribner's Sons about a review of a children's book that she wrote. Repplier's letters to Margaret Farrand are of a friendly nature. She writes (12 January 1912) about having gone to see J. M. Synge's play "The Playboy of the Western World" and how it was received with riots in New York and in Philadelphia, and she includes some newspaper clippings about it. Other topics include her travels, mutual friends such as Cornelia Frothingham and her nervous breakdown, and her visit with Mrs. Schuyler Warren, the mistress of a literary salon in New York, at Sea Bright, NJ. In most of her letters Repplier writes about Rockywold Camp on the Squam Lake in New Hampshire where they used to spend their summer vacations. The letters were sent from Philadelphia, where Repplier lived, and also from Massachusetts; Newport, Rhode Island; Italy; France; and Nova Scotia.
