For preservation reasons, original analog
and digital media may not be read or played back in the
reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media
but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog
audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality
standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests
are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note,
the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks
to as long as several months and there may be financial costs
associated with the process.

The collection consists of selected letters and photographs authors, poets, and friends collected by Alice Davis Tibbetts. Included are a visiting card of Ford Madox Ford; a photograph of Thomas Wolfe; photographs of Dexter, Gertrude, and Marcia Masters; two letters and a card from H. L. Mencken; a photograph of Pearl Violet Metzelthin inscribed to Tibbetts; two photographs of Gerald Sanders; five cards and one letter by Jesse Stuart; four photographs of A. M. Sullivan; a "Thank you" note from Virgil Thomson; and a letter by John Hall Wheelock. The material was laid-in a collection of books presented by Alice Davis Tibbetts to Princeton University Library.

Alice Elizabeth Davis Tibbetts met Edgar Lee Masters during the Great Depression in the lobby of the Hotel Chelsea in 1936. She became his secretary, companion, and romantic partner until 1944 when Masters was taken from the hotel to a hospital and then a nursing home. The two never married. Following this relationship, Davis was married unsucessfully to a merchant sailor before marrying Charles Tibbetts. Mrs. Tibbetts died in New York City on September 29, 1988.
Edgar Lee Masters, American poet, novelist, and biographer, is best known as the author of the Spoon River Anthology (1915). Born in Garnett, Kansas, in 1868, he maintained a successful law practice in Chicago, Illinois, from 1892 to 1920, and made his debut as a poet in 1898 with A Book of Verse. After retiring from practicing law, he devoted himself entirely to writing. He died in Philadelphia on March 5, 1950.
