Scope and Contents

The collection consists of selected letters by Fisher. Included are five letters (1985-1988) by Fisher to Jeff Schaire of Art & Antiques, a New York City magazine; eight letters (1946) by Fisher and one letter (1946) by Donald Friede (Fisher's husband, 1945-1951) to Henry Volkening of Russell and Volkening, a New York City literary agency; and one undated photograph (copy) of Fisher and Alfred Young Fisher (her first husband).

Collection Creator Biography:

Fisher

Fisher was a prolific writer of books dealing with food and the culture of cuisine. She wrote upwards of 20 books and also published two volumes of journals and correspondence shortly before her death in 1992. Her first book, Serve it Forth, was published in 1937. Her primary works focused on many different aspects of food, such as: preparation, natural history, culture, and philosophy.

Gift of Mary Jane and Daniel Woodward in November 2007 (AM2008-38).

For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process.
