Description:

The collection consists of selected correspondence, documents, and ephemera relating to Stanford or family members or friends. Included are four letters by Stanford to James Chapman (1785-1857), rector; one letter by James Matlock (1775-1840), New Jersey congressman; two Civil War letters by Stanford's son, one (1865) from Fort Pocahontas, Virginia; one letter by Burgess Allison (1753-1827), chaplain of U.S. House of Representatives; and a copy of Stanford's engraved bookplate. There are also signed receipts for payments made by Stanford for such things as house rent, taxes, coal, a coach, several picture frames, subscriptions to the Ladies' Literary Cabinet, and a donation to the Association for the Relief of Respectable, Aged, Indigent Females; a receipt for a portrait of Stanford signed by the New Jersey portrait painter John Paradise (1783-1833); and a ferrotype portrait of "cousin Elizabeth Andrew."
