Collection Description & Creator Information
The collection consists of correspondence between David Nelson Rowe and five of his Princeton University students who had joined the U.S. Army, Navy, or the Marines, during World War II. Included are seven letters from Howard O. Anderson, Princeton Class of 1943; three letters from David F. Anthony, Princeton Class of 1946; eight letters from Kenneth E. Folsom, Princeton Class of 1943, and one from Rowe to Folsom; two letters of David Frank, Princeton Class of 1944; and four letters from William J. Hudson, Jr., Princeton Class of 1945. The letters were sent from different locations where their authors were stationed, including Australia, Hawaii, Japan, and New Guinea. In addition to writing about family matters and Rowe's new book, China Among the Powers, the former students write about their activities and routines in the army, casualties which the U.S. has sustained, their next assignments, and what they will be doing after the end of the war. In addition to these letters, there is a copy of the cover letter which Rowe sent with his gift to Princeton University Library, giving a brief biography of himself and of some of his students.
The letters are arranged by date.
